In Tartous, the Old City remains today the only clear historical centre. The history of the city starts from Phoenicians, Romans, and Crusaders and continues through centuries, in which local residents and time itself have marked the architecture of this part of the city. The article deals with the main features of the architecture in the Old City of Tartous in two periods: the Late Ottoman and the French Mandate, with links to understanding the social, economic and political context of the region between the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, and links to similarities with the architecture of neighborhood cities.
